Get rid of "count down lights". It is my observation that this system contributes to yellow/red light running which is absolutely horrendous in this city! Better still, lets put in red light cameras to smarten drivers up!!
Digital numbers are needed instead of lights. At 50km, how else to 'guess' when the light turns yellow.
Green, yellow, red light has been used since the early 1900's. As the speed limits increased, the only change has been to the timing of how many seconds for each light color. Yellow is only two? seconds. Yes, that clears the intersection, but doesn't give much notice for slowing down or stopping before entering the red light camera's view. The 1 second extension of the yellow light is mandatory for an intersection with a red light camera. The stopping time, even at 30km on dry pavement, is very sudden. One driver's 'guessing' of sp eed, traction, light duration, their own vehicle's tires and brakes, is different from others' guesses. And some just give up on the math and follow the driver ahead of them.
I think they at least to be consistent. The one on 28th and 2nd counts to zero and immediately turns yellow but the one at Marquis and 6th, it stays green for quite a while after it hits zero. And still others count to zero and then go back to the white cross signal. Maybe it's done purposely so that we don't get use to one set pattern. Annoying or genius? :)
Countdown lights are installed as a pedestrian safety feature so that pedestrians can judge whether they have enough time to cross. These are not meant as a vehiclce safety measure, or for vehicles to guage when they have to stop.

central ave and 15th st: The light goes yellow when the countdown is done,
Only a few intersections have this safety feature. The ones that don't cowntdown this precise, have vehicles going thru the yellow light.

there IS an issue with timing.
Several intersections, the countdown timer is completed and the light stays green.
how can a driver plan his approach?
the Yellow has to come on at the Zero count to make it work safely, otherwise it is a guessing game
