While attempting to cross Duke Street on my bike, I eventually realized that I do not get a green light unless a car pulls up and triggers the sensor. Is it less important for bikes to be able to use the light than cars? Why would the system be set up for only one type of road user?

I have had similar experiences in other cities. In my experience some lights like this can be triggered or I have been required to use the crosswalk. I have successfully triggered some, but not all, lights using these techniques: http://www.wikihow.com/Trigger-Green-Traffic-Lights
Some cities have upgraded to cameras that can detect a bicyclist. I am new to Alexandria, does anyone know if this has ever been considered here?
