The schooner Quinnipiack was broken onto and tools were moved about the vessel. Some tools were stolen. This is after a rash of vandalism this past October caused the small non-profit to remove all of the gear from the boat. Since installing new locks this past week, the gear was slowly being put back onboard. Today, during our lunch break, someone broke onboard and stole more tools. If anyone sees anything suspicious, please contact the NHPD as they have a report on file of this issue.

The police have stepped up their patrols it seems. However, Schooner should be aware that "scrap dealers" come through City Point all hours of the day/night..ESPECIALLY late night weekends. I have called the police numerous times to report suspicious activity. In the past they were slow to respond. I have seen people "dumpster diving" in the Schnoor dumpster. The dumpster alone has attracted an element to this part of City point that is not desireable to say the least! If it is not neighborhood kids playing in/on it...then it attracts "people" to further investigate it and ALL of the boats and equipment kept in its vicinity. When I have called the police...there have been occassions where an officer came out...BUT...I was told because there are not "No tresspasing signs" posted there is little for the police to do until something is actually taken. As a member of the block watch I did report this to out bloack watch President and it was relayed to the New Haven Police.
It is unfortunate that this has happenned. Schooner may want to consider surveillence cameras for the boats...not just the Quinnipiack. If people know the area is under video surveillence it might not only cut down on the theft and vandelism...but the drug dealing taking place behind the dumpster as well.

Yesterday, it appears that kids broke into a school building, ripped the window screens out of another, and broke onto one of Schooners boas - and discharged a fire extinguisher all over the boat. Two kids were caught by NHPD - 10 and 11 years old
As far as the Dumpster, I'll let Sound School know that there have been issues around the Dumpster. I'll see what can be done about signs, too.
Thank you for helping everyone - luckily none of these kids got hurt during their escapades. The Harbor in the winter is no place to fool around!

Kristin - I was the person that called the Poloce on these children. There were actually 3 of them. However, this one stood outside of the building as the other two gained entry. First they were jumping in and out of the dumpster. Then they took to trying to gain entry to the building next to the dumpster. This is when they began ripping the screens off windows. This is when I called the police. It was not until the kids were actually trying to pry open a window did the poice feel compelled to send a car right away. By the time the police arrived (18 minutes from my call) the children had moved to the building where Schooner works on the boats inside. The children jumped the barrier that was intended to keep people away from the dock area damaged by Irene. Then two pried a back window open and went inside. They then began throwing things out the window to the chid that remainded outside. When the police arrived the child outside took off running before police could get their bearings on which building the kids were in. Sadly, these are the same kids that took black pain and smeared it all over the windows of the boat shed several months before. These are the same kids that various neighbors have repeatedly told not to climb on or into the boats over the past 2 years. Again, the police dispatcher indicated the Sound School and/or Schooner needed to file a complaint. So, even though the residents of City Point call and report the activity it seems, that unless the children are breaking & entering, the police will not make an arrest unless a formal complaint is made by the sound School or Schooner. Hopefully, since 2 of these kids were caught the vandalism will stop.
Unfortunately, the dumpster still invites adults to "investigate." On the morning of 3/4 at about 6:30am a "junk collector" was trying to pry open the chainlink fence to get to the boating supplies/parts under the classroom building. When this person saw me stretching for my morning jog they jumped back in their truck and sped off. Their truck had NO LICENSE PLATE.
Sadly it seems that unless the Sound School and Schooner post signs for no tresspassing, invest in a locked dumpster (or move the dumpster over toward the aquicultural center) and/or considers installing video surveillence cameras the theft will probably continue.
