This stretch of road has gotten extremely dangerous now with the pavement being so bad. It's especially hazardous for cyclists (adults and children) who often use Chabot to access Chabot Elementary or biking routes in the hills. The combination of the poor quality of the road, fast moving cars, and cyclists is a serious accident waiting to happen. This is a big legal liability for the city of Oakland.

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of the city. I agree. The potholes in Chabot road are terrible. It is a narrow road already and incredibly dangerous to be driving around the large number of potholes.

My daughter has just learned how to drive and the potholes make her very nervous and unsure of herself. She is trying to go around them and doesn't have the benefit of years of experience. I am afraid she is going to hit a parked car by swerving to avoid the numerous potholes.

So is Shafter/Keith,Broadway east to the freeway entrance. Memories of Zambia highways during its communist days. I can hardly hold the steering wheel, although, I admit, I have not hit the car roof yet.! I thought Jane Brunner might be able to put in a word for us.

I agree that Chabot Rd is very bad, but also Broadway St going north from the Shell station onto Hwy 13 is very bad. Also Keith St from College to Broadway is riddled with potholes. Thanks for your help in this matter. Flo Haedt

City of Oakland Public Works Agency addressed this issue on 05/31/2012, service request # 401295.

There were a couple small asphalt patches along Chabot Rd to address some of the largest potholes somewhat, but the issue of seriously deteriorated and extremely rough pavement has not been addressed. The only solution which could close this issue is a full repave, which I understand is unlikely to happen in the short term (estimated cost $500k) but it is disingenuous to suggest that the small patches have resolved the problem and the report should remain open.

I agree with the previous poster. Yes, some larger holes have been filled in (patched) but other smaller ones remain, and overall the road is in terrible shape. This is a significant thoroughfare for cars and bikes traveling to Chabot Elementary, the Chabot baseball fields, and access to highway 13, and it needs regrading and repaving. It's just a mess the way it is now.

I drive Chabot daily and often have to drive in the middle of the road to avoid all the potholes. I zig and zag between lanes (and it is a two way street!). Something really needs to be done!

The city of Oakland has Chabot Road on their repaving schedule, but not until 2014. In the meantime I have seen them filling some of the bigger potholes with asphalt but at this stage it is just patches on top of patches which doesn't solve much of anything. Hope is on the horizon if we can hold out another year, though!

The problem isn't just potholes, but long, vertical strips of holes in the pavement at least 4 inches deep and at least 4-5 inches wide. It is very dangerous for motorscooter riders and especially cyclists, and cars do go around them making this an unpleasant road to be on. I've noticed the problem since 2010 and have not seen any of the "potholes" being filled. I hope it does not get dropped from the re-pavement schedule.
