Oakwood Avenue is a TRUCK ROUTE. Perhaps, we should just get rid of all the redlights and stop signs so that these truckers don't have to stop for them. That way, they won't need to use their jake brake. The jack brake is just that, a brake. Additional power is required to stop a fully loaded big rig. I appreaciate the nuisance they are having lived near a red light on Route 2 which the trucks always had to slow down to stop at. The jack brake allows them to do that safely.

The fact is, the trucks aren't just using their jake brakes at stop signs and red lights. On Oakwood Ave they speed down the hill as fast as possible and then ride their jake brakes the entire way down the hill. They do this over and over and over 7 days a week. Ask any resident how annoying it is.

They don't NEED to use their jake brakes. They use them to save wear and tear on their regular brakes.

If trucks can't stop safely without using their jake brakes then how do they stop in communities who have adopted "NO JAKE BRAKE" ordinances? Explain that?

Why do you think no engine brake ordinances have been implemented in residential neighborhoods like Bennington VT?

Because inconsiderate trucking companies like FANE, GALLIVAN and Troy sand & gravel don't care about the noise pollution they emit on a daily/hourly basis.

Would it be so difficult for the trucks to not use their engine brakes in residential areas? They're pushing residents to get angry and force city government to adopt similar no engine brake ordinances.

If they keep up their noise pollution, they're going to eventually be met by signs like this one.

Probably the least valuable fix I've seen on here. It is a truck route, if you don't like it simply leave. Problem solved. And for the record "modified cars" such as turbo or etc actually save the air quite a bit. They use exhaust gas to spew back into the engine thus allowing the engine to burn off more oxygen and gasses, please know what you're talking about first.

"if you don't like it, simply leave".That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. "Leaving" is not an option for most HOMEOWNERS. The residents here aren't the people breaking the law... it's the truckers that drive up and down RT40 all day.

RT40 is a truck route. We all know that. Being a truck route does not give the trucking companies free reign to completely ignore the noise ordinances.

Each truck is supposed to have a "serviceable" & unaltered exhaust system. The trucks that do, have very quiet engine brakes. The trucks that have gutted exhausts (for more power) and use their jake brakes are breaking noise laws constantly.

Imagine if people started taking all the baffling out of their car and motorcycle exhaust systems just to gain a little extra power? If you or I did that, we'd be pulled over and ticketed daily... until we were forced to make our vehicles conform to the noise laws.

For some reason, the Troy police look the other way when it comes to these trucking companies. I know these companies help with road projects on an ongoing basis. Maybe that's why they're allowed to ignore the noise ordinances?

And who said anything about turbos? I'm talking about modified EXHAUST SYSTEMS.

They rip the baffles out of the mufflers to gain a little extra power. By simply listening, you can instantly tell which trucks have done this. It is illegal to modify your exhaust and it is illegal to emit more than 70dB of sound measured @ 25 feet.

I didn't write the laws. If you don't agree with them, change them. Otherwise, the laws need to be enforced. It's not fair to ask homeowners to leave just to avoid the illegal noise being made by a few rude trucking companies.

I truly understand your frustration Rt40. Living on a truck route is not an easy life. The noise and pollution generated by the dialy truck runs requires residents to keep their windows shut. No fresh air into a home is not a good thing. Get ready for an additional company to be making daily runs (night-time too). County Waste. Don't think that expansion won't affect you. The proposed expansion of the County Waste Transfer Station in South Troy will bring lots more trucks down Route 40. That WILL affect you. Real Citizens of Troy MUST speak out against that expansion. Given your passion for your neighborhood, I hope you will take a moment to state your opinion on detrimental effects additional truck traffic will have within your on neighborhood, along an already defined truck route.

Let's face it, it isn't the jake brake that's the problem, it's the illegal 6 & 8 inch straight stacks.

Troy sand and gravel are the main offenders. Their old, blue and orange trucks all have straight stacks. The Troy S&G drivers have no concern about the communities they travel through.

Travis would have all residents that don't like the noise to simply sell their house and move. That's a great idea?! Let's all sell our homes on Oakwood ave hill and move because a few Troy S&G Trucks aren't complying with the noise ordinances. Great idea Travis.

Wouldn't it make more sense to force Troy Sand & Gravel to comply with the law?
