There have been many, many accidents at this intersection over the last 30 years. In the 1970s, there was a flashing yellow light on the side of the road to the south of the blind intersection warning drivers. Apparently the town didn't want to maintain it and they took it down. Just like the stop signs on Stone Quarry Rd that keep moving further and further back from the intersection because the highway department keeps having to put the run down signs back up. The truth is the whole intersection should be rebuilt. The hill should be cut down to increase the sight distance and a four way stop should be put in. The town doesn't want to spend the money and they are waiting for a developer to come along, build-up the mostly rural Stone Quarry Road a make them pay for the upgrades...upgrades they have known the road has needed for decades. The other issue here are the VERY high speeds that traffic travels down the Woodin Road to Route 9 section of Stone Quarry Road. The posted limit on Stone Quarry is 40 (probably too high with the sight distances on the street), but the AVERAGE speed as reported in the most recent traffic study on the road is 47 mph. That means for every car driving the full, probably too high speed limit, there is another car driving 54 mph! On a narrow dark road with several blind curves. (at night, traffic is regularly going over 60).
Problem is, this has been brought to the towns attention...they just don't seem to care.
