The following email was provided by the Borough Commissioner on April 28, 2001. A new “Wait for Walk Signal” is planned but not yet installed. This would be a good step in controlling the crowd exiting the 96th St subway and keeping them from crossing into the intersection against the red walk signal as they are doing now, which leaves the intersection full of people when left-arrow signal turns green for cars.

An investigation completed earlier this month found these signals operating properly with an adequate amount of time located for the pedestrian crossings.

We provide a total of 28 seconds to cross West 96th Street, a distance of 53 feet, which equates to a walking speed of 1.89 feet per second. We also provide a total of 32 seconds to cross Broadway, a distance of 60 feet, which equates to a walking speed of 1.87 feet per second. The crossing time is adequate even for slower-paced pedestrians (the average walking speed is generally considered to be 3.5 feet per second).

To increase pedestrian safety, we recently implemented daylighting (removal of parking) at the northwest corner of the intersection, which improves motorists’ visibility of pedestrians in the crosswalk. Additionally, we have placed an order for “Wait for Walk Signal” signage that will be installed by the end of May 2011.
