Even though English Drive skirts East Rock Park it also provides some much needed thru traffic access to businesses and families living in the Fair Haven area. Over many decades English Drive and it's sister road, Farnam Drive have been used as an illegal dumping area by many, many people. Because these are non residential roads there is no 24 hour vigilance and also no streetlights. To sum up we will not be able to curtail this kind of activity, however as responsible citizens we can accept the need to be the caretakers for the park, reporting illegal trash deposit as you have done, and whenever possible to do what we can to take care of our ancient and beloved wooded sanctuary.
I have to agree with Rob on this one. I also observed much more illegal dumping in the park since the road reopened. I understand that this is a complex problem to solve, but there must be a solution to at least mitigate it. Having the opportunity (road open to vehicles) and with little accountability and deterrents (lights, cameras, etc) the illegal dumpers are going to continue and the situation can only get worse.
Yes, what you say is true East Rock Resident, but when you type 'the situation can only get worse' I honestly don't see how. I have already viewed small mountains of trash on these roads over the years. I suppose if someone came in at night with a few pickup trucks or a dump truck filled with debris that could be worse. But again, if we accept that our less conscientious neighbors are going to be 'trashy' and we take it upon ourselves to be the ones who will do the right thing, then life goes on. I am not in favor of closing English Drive. I would like to take this opportunity to give a proper salute to the crews of the New Haven Department of Public Works, who have performed sterling service for our community and our town. Thank you.
